I've attended community panels to hear administrators and leaders discuss the absence of "identity" in the Arlington community and the university, and I've learned a lot about being caught in the middle of an interesting Fort Worth – Dallas dynamic (Dallas folks won't like the order). Working in Arlington has made me think a lot about how a community, business, or university develops an identity, or I guess these days the trendy word is brand. I guess I should have known since arriving from Western Kentucky University in 2018, I've heard two things over and over on campus, the University of Texas at Arlington is historically a "commuter/transfer school" and it hasn't had a football team since 1985. I was sporting a UTA t-shirt on a trip to Houston recently when I heard a gentleman shout, "Hey! UTA!" When I walked over to say hello, he laughed, "You guys don't have a football team! When are you getting football back?" The conversation didn't go much further than that.
